San Jose Rocks
Agency principal Dan Orloff has spent more than three decades building relationships at the intersection of marketing, live music, and Silicon Valley culture. He has guided public relations campaigns for a wide variety of companies, venues, and cultural organizations. But there is no question about his priority passion. It has a backbeat and a melody.
Orloff Marketing continues to rock its clients across Silicon Valley. But for the past two decades, it's been rocking something else as well.
Since 1992, Orloff Marketing has helped fill seats at live music and cultural events across Silicon Valley — including the San Jose Symphony, San Jose Jazz, the Fountain Blues Festival, Mountain Winery, Montalvo, American Musical Theatre, Music in the Park, and the San Jose Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon.
Orloff and music were an organic match from birth. Dan's father, Jerry Orloff, was a barbershop quartet legend inducted into Nashville's International Barbershop Harmony Society Hall of Fame in 2011. Dan's musical bent took a different direction — he shared a cousin with rock legend Bob Dylan, who encouraged Dan to pick up the guitar in 1963. In 1978, he put his encyclopedic music knowledge to the test as a contestant on ABC's Name That Tune.
Dan also served on the Board of Directors of History San José for more than a decade. That experience — combined with a lifelong love of local history — is what led him to found San Jose Rocks in 2006.
One quick note before you wonder: "San Jose" is shorthand for the entire region the world knows as Silicon Valley, because the music stories here have never respected city limits — and neither do we. In our name, "Rocks" is a verb, not a genre.
San Jose Rocks is a Silicon Valley nonprofit building a multimedia archive, interactive timelines, a GPS-triggered Music Heritage Trail, and a mobile app linking historic music locations throughout the county. Our exclusive first-person stories cannot be found on Google or Wikipedia. They exist only at sanjoserocks.org.
Last December, our bronze plaque dedication at San Jose City Hall — marking the site of the Grateful Dead's first performance — reached a potential worldwide audience of more than 300 million people. That was project number one.
If you have a story to tell, Dan wants to hear it.
