A Brighter Shade of Green

GreenWaste Recovery, Zanker Recycling and its five affiliated companies quickly grew into one of the most innovative waste recovery companies in the world. Yet, with their original acronym logo, they looked and sounded like every other local garbage company.

San Jose Rocks

Agency principal Dan Orloff has made his reputation as one of the Bay Area’s most energetic marketing gurus. He has guided public relations campaigns for a variety of successful companies and businesses. But there is no question about his priority passion. It has a backbeat and melody.

Orloff Marketing is not a musical act. But if it were, it would be a large band with a horn section and backup choir.  And it would touch all genres, from rock to jazz to country and blues.

Since 1992, Orloff Marketing has worked for or partnered with numerous live music venues and organizations--big ones, small ones, outdoors and indoors. The company has forged relationships with the San Jose Symphony, Montalvo Arts Center, Mountain Winery, San Jose Center for the Performing Arts, San Jose Jazz Festival, San Jose Fountain Blues & Brews Festival (Dan serves on its board of directors), San Jose Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, and numerous clubs throughout the South Bay.

Orloff and music were an organic match from birth. Dan’s father, Jerry Orloff, was a barbershop quartet legend and was inducted into Nashville’s International Barbershop Harmony Society Hall of Fame in 2011. Dan’s musical bent took a different direction. In 1963, he learned that he was a shirttail cousin of rock legend Bob Dylan. Dan immediately picked up the guitar. He has played either that instrument or a drum kit in various cover bands ever since.

It was only natural that in 2005, Dan’s love affair with both music and local history would lead the Orloff Marketing team to create San Jose Rocks. The organization’s mission is simple and focused. It exists to honor and tell the stories about a unique city and region that has spawned creative people who—both as performers and technical innovators--have converged to shape the soundtrack of our world. From the Grateful Dead to the Doobie Brothers, from Smash Mouth to Trapt, from Ampex to Apple iTunes and GarageBand, the South Bay and Silicon Valley have made an indelible mark.

As a fan, Orloff was impressed by all of it. But he saw a void. No entity was aspiring to collate, authenticate, and highlight the elements that propelled the area to become such a hotbed of musical accomplishments and the epicenter of music industry technology. San Jose Rocks aims to fill that role through a dynamic website, scholarly research, podcasts and live events. And it plans to make lots of noise while doing so.

Thanks to Orloff, the San Jose Rocks website is open for business 24 hours a day.  If you have a story to tell, he wants to hear it.
